I've found this app to be incredibly useful while on trail and also while setting at the house planning your next section. I recently had an issue with it loosing my AT map purchase. Being off trail it wasn't a big deal, but I can imagine how frustrating it would be to lose it while hiking. I'm pleased to say that after I sent an email to customer service, they resolved the problem even though it was on the Weekend. They really take care of it's customers!

I consider their guides to be essential gear. For me, Guthook Guides add a layer of safety (and thus, enjoyment) to my hikes. Of course, I always carry paper maps and a compass, and I know how to use them having learned day/night land nav in the US Army ('86-'92). Guthook Guides always lets me know the essentials: where I am and where the trail is - even on 'airplane mode'! With all the additional information I have when there IS a data signal, I can relax and enjoy my surroundings more.

This is definitely the best GPS app for thru hiking. Waypoint photos allow you to get a glimpse of shelters, campgrounds, parking areas, and more! The user comments are extremely helpful for real-time updates on wildlife activity, water availability, closures, etc. Well worth the money! I also bought some of the regional map bundles and they are super helpful for trip planning, but the custom route option is a bit finicky, so I'd like to see that ironed out a bit so I can get rid of AllTrails.

Overall invaluable to Hikers! World like maps to auto load when you searching between sections of the map. Moving back and forth when you're at the end/beginning is tedious. Also would really love the ability to pick a start and stop point and get data when planning ahead for future days! When sitting at a hostel, it would make the planning easier. But overall, we love it! OMG! I never knew that existed!! Watched the video and just planned a route. That's so helpful. Thank you!

I've bought and used FarOut for my Long Trail thru (complete) and AT LASH (upcoming). It should be a no-brainer for anyone doing the same. You get accurate GPS of the trail, all sorts of planning stuff (water, campsites, town) and the big advantage is the depth of information, both from the app developers and fellow hikers. More than once, I've run into some poor unfortunate who didn't know about the app, all it takes is to show them the info they need on the app and they all download it.

amazing app for the trails. the download function in advance is simple, and gives you all of the stuff you need when offline. mixture of map and profile view are a great combination, though it would be useful to have the ability to highlight 2 locations. GPS Tracking yourself works, although it does eat into your battery a little more if you do. would be good to have more details in there about shuttle companies to ease access in and out of locations. otherwise, excellent functionality.

Just finished the AZT. Loved the App for knowing at all time where I was. However, I wished I could have identified more mountain ranges, or summits, or any features around the trail. Put name on what I was seeing. Also, roads should show more clearly maybe. I had problems adding reports. But reading others was great. Thanks a lot. You are doing a great job.

This app has become the Gold Standard for thru hikers. The good is that it can keep you on the trail, even when no real trail exists. Also really useful in snow. The bad: We have found errors in some cases on the actual trail location (both CDT and PNT). The errors were usually obvious enough to ignore the app, but may make you pause to figure out the error. Since the errors are reasonably rare, I can give it a 4/5 stars. Additional thoughts: The input from other hikers is invaluable, so its a part of the app it is in your best interest to get familiar with. Finally getting help from their staff is great, when you do run into technical difficulties.

Update: Issue fixed in a roundabout way. On the PCT. First time I used it on trail, the comments wouldn't load and/or update. Now I'm on the next map and 3 nights ago it crashed and now every time I close the window the program refuses to open. I have to uninstall and reinstall just to open it again. I have a Samsung S10

I previously gave this app a 1 star due to the fact that most of my purchases did not transfer over. I wrote an e mail to support and waited 2 days for a response. I then posted a negative review and was contacted that same day. Since then, support has contacted me and credited me with my purchases. Right now everything is working well. I just wish that the developers would have ironed out the bugs prior to releasing the new app.

I used Guthook for my 2019 PCT thruhike and well.the app is great with it's comments, water sources, tentistes.. BUT 90% of time the GPS locator didn't work so I actually didn't know where I was which was frustrating especially in the snowy Sierras.. I was using Garmin navigation instead.. the other thing is that it happened to me that several times all of sudden the whole trail disappeared I was told that I hadn't purchased it.. so once online again (which takes days..) I had to install it again

Maybe I'm being too generous with two stars. I'm in my home, on Wi-Fi, looking at (supposedly) downloaded maps and the refresh rate is beyond awful. I can only imagine this nonsense "in the wild." This is, of course, after I bought a module. Never would have had I known how glitchy and bad the map is.

I've used FarOut for years and it works well... EXCEPT when it screws up and you have to uninstall and reinstall it, which just happened. Then, you need to re-download all your purchased trails (and each section of longer trails like the AT) and each component of the downloads again, which is super-inconvenient and time consuming. After all these years, you would think the FarOut app would be able to remember your downloads when you reinstall it.

Was recently a 5 Star app. Too many changes have ruined this once great App. Has become unreliable. You are likely (at inopertune times) to try to open the app (that was working an hour earlier) and find that it says you have to buy the maps you have purchased and were just using. Unfortunately this happened recently on the AT with no wireless service. Useless if you can't access your purchases. I have had to remove and reload the app more times than is excusable. They have ruined a good thing!

This app is only useable if you pay for the subscription or buy a guide and it seems to only be for people doing really long hikes, thinks days to months. I'm rating it 1 star because that needs to be made clear in the description, instead of having people download the app, create an account, and then delete the app. Plus the only way to delete your account is to email them and wait for their response, which is bull.

Unreliable. I have talked to a lot of hikers on trail who have had similar experiences. The app signs you out randomly, and if you don't have service to sign back in, you are left without the maps you paid for. Edit: I had already contacted support. They had me uninstall and reinstall the app. It changed the appearance for a day and prompted me 4 times to rate their app in the first week. Edit 2: I got signed out again on 8/11 and it took 3 days to get signed in because I didn't have connection

Reduced to one star because all of my purchases were wiped from my account. Every single time I've emailed them with an issue, they have insisted they've never heard of that problem before and assure me that they're correct. Support is useless. Not only did I triple crown with FarOut maps (to supplement other guides), I had purchased about a dozen others. My library now says zero purchases. This company sucks.

DROPPED FEATURE!!! I used to use Guthook and now I use Farout, but a feature was removed. I don't know when that happened, last season I was on a trail not covered by the app. My issue today is that at each waypoint the app used to give me the distance to the next water, next campsite, and next shelter (also previous ones). This is gone. I'll give 5 stars when this feature is back, it was too useful to be dropped like that ... Farout responded but to give me information on how to fix GPS issues!

The new version keeps kicking me out randomly, which makes it really inconvenient when trying to save routes. Often says "session aborted" Edit: this is not a support issue, it's a design one. If you are in areas with bad cell signal (on a long hike, what are the chances?) it kicks you out. There is no option to store all data offline. That's a poor design.
