It's mostly great. The algorithm has a few issues when I arrive home by car and doesn't auto open. I think it errs on the side of safety, locking when there is a doubt about whether to lock, which can feel inconvenient but better than the alternative. It's complex to get it right all the time, having worked developing android apps myself. All in all, it's pretty decent.
The app and lock have been keeping my house safe for years. The lock always engages when the app says it does (if installed correctly). I can not give the app 5 stars because the app doesn't always work and needs to be restarted to then engage the lock, not a deal breaker by any means. Other than that, solid product that I've been happy with for years.
The smart lock is perfect for the mobility impaired, like myself. I can lock and unlock my door from my bed. I love the autó lock feature, so you can set the door to lock on a timer. The auto unlock with Bluetooth hardly works so definitely get the keypad. The wireless hub doesn't work at all, unfortunately. I tried two different ones from August, so you can't connect this to a smart hone or control the lock when away.
Great door lock and application. One complaint; I wish it had a setting where the door would automatically lock at a specific time. The application would alarm you that it is the time you (the user) have set and if you want to cancel the preset lock time. This would help at the end of the day to ensure the device is all locked up. Thank you!
It has no Android widget that I can put on my home screen to make locking/unlocking a one-touch process. The app knows when you leave home, but it has no option to lock automatically as you leave. The app can't be used as an output for IFTTT to let me automate this myself (for example, to lock when all members of my life360 family are away from home). This seems to have been a conscious choice by the developers, because August works as an IFTTT input only. The option to lock on a timer isn't a substitute, because if I'm working in the yard without my phone or keys it will lock me out. So, I either have to buy a keypad as a workaround to their conscious decision to leave out app functionality, or I just can't lock my door automatically. Kind of silly for an app that can unlock your door automatically as you arrive home.
It was a little tricky getting the lock to connect to WiFi but once I did that, it has performed seamlessly. It does go through batteries quicker than I thought. That is the only downside. Update 7/8/2025: Still like the app. The lock itself depends on the door remaining stable, so I occasionally have to tightened the hinge screws and ever couple of years recalibrate the lock, but the app shows you how to do that.
The app tried to sell me a Wi-Fi to Bluetooth bridge for my lock. I already have one. You'd think the app would know that. As of 7-2025, Alexa automations are partially broken. My current lock is EOL and not supported well any longer. The solution to all my problems is just buying a new set of locks. I'm no longer impressed. Also, every time I use the app, it asks me if I'm happy. Checking the box to not ask again does nothing.
It's a deadbolt you can control with your phone. I would have liked to use August as my own "security", but there is too much delay in their notifications. I have an "alert" set up to notify me anytime my door is unlocked manually or if the door is left open for a specified amount of time. The app settings are set to always on and no battery saving functions are enabled. By the time I get the notification, it would be too late if something bad were to take place. It works. Not great.
Great app, very convenient most of the time. I have a few problems that are bothersome enough to have to remove two stars. I get multiple battery critically low alert messages everyday 3 or 4 months before the batteries actually die! Location awareness is buggy on the Android app, so I can't use it. Often, when opening the app, it takes too long to connect, but when it finally does, I attempt to press the big red unlock button, but it is unresponsive. I have to close then reopen. Plz fix 🫠
Updated Review (dropping stars). Dropping review from 4 to 2 stars. They've introduced some additional security settings (not like the phone doesn't already have password protections) that I can't turn off... grrr I'm also now getting pop-ups for unlocking the lock when the phone connects, but doesn't the red or green circle already do that? Why am I using a pop-up for something that was already working? Why are we trying to fix things that aren't broken? The app is going the wrong direction.
Usually, the app will not unlock my door. It will be connected to the lock, and it will show the door is locked, but when I press to unlock it, it does nothing. I have to exit and reopen the app 2 to 3 times on average before it will finally work. The auto unlock almost never works. Which used to not bother me because they were very clear that there were some problems on Android. About 2 years in now, and they still haven't done anything to fix it even though they say they are. That bothers me.
I've been using the app for years. It's been good but frequently needs resetting. Sometimes it makes me unlock my phone multiple times. I'd recommend it because the hardware is fantastic, but if you ever need to open your door with any real urgency, look elsewhere or keep your key handy. Edit for devs: I suspect jumping to wifi too quickly is a factor due to my home layout; having a manual option for switching between wifi and BT would be nice, it tries the jump when STILL well in BT range.
I have used August for years now, and have always loved it. Now, it's basically useless! I have to rush in the app to open before the app crashes, it tries to connect through WiFi first and even though I have a bridge it will jump to Bluetooth afterwards. Should start with Bluetooth and switch to WiFi afterwards if it doesn't find it with BT. Most importantly, the app doesnt work and hasnt for a while. At first I assumed it was just auto unlock, but the whole app crashes every time I open it!
Wifi does not work well. Neither my own (Android phone) nor my girlfriend (Apple phone) can reliability get it to work. Wifi claims to have strong signal. It's basically a Bluetooth only lock, which makes me wonder why I paid extra for the wifi. Update: 3 years later, lock is still basically bluetooth only. Very difficult to get to stay connected via wifi despite strong signal. Even struggles to connect to lock to adjust any settings.
The August app has been working really poorly this year. Half of the times it doesn't work. And then an update seemed to have fixed it, and I enjoyed trouble free experience for a while. I turned off auto update just in case an update would brick it again. And then I accidentally updated the app, and now it doesn't work again. Every time you press the green circle to lock, the app freezes up and does nothing. It's been very frustrating. I wish I had never bought this lock!
So disappointing. I installed the August system to make my home more secure and make life easier. But when I check the status of my lock all it will ever tell me anymore is, "Unknown." Which means not only can I not check to see if my door is locked/unlocked. But neither can I remotely lock or unlock my door. I've unplugged and rebooted the actual hardware several times. Uninstalled and reinstalled the app. All to no avail!!! It has been useless
The app always hang when I hit unlock, I have to flip screens to see it change from red to green. Also connecting takes FOREVER, bluetooth or wifi. Further, the lock doesn't support 5ghz? Wow, it's 2022. My advice, steer clear from this lock. I would return it but I am way past 30 days. I was trying to be hopeful it would get better, it just doesn't.
Basic functions usually work. It's not reliable. When batteries are low, the app will report the lock is locked, but it's not. And the low battery warning is not reliable. The verified access feature cannot be turned off despite a setting to turn it off. It's beyond annoying. The feature to auto-unlock the door is unreliable also. When the phone changes networks the app usually has to be closed and restarted and takes a long time to reconnect.
drains battery and I have to wait outside or open the app and jump through hoops to get it to open the door. the device is way underpowered and needs a much more power. It can't lock most of the time either because it doesn't have enough power. They should make a wired device that goes in the door frame vs the door. It would be a better product.
