What a huge improvement this app has gone through since I last used it two years ago, they really listened to the feedback! The layout is amazing with a nice menu at the bottom. It has a great continue watching section, favorites and casting ability that fixes a convention to your TV once and then you can move freely in the app going from show to show, other apps can learn from this one. My one issue is that I cannot use the keyboard on the TV version of the app thus I can't search or login.
good content but glitchy. I will often start watching a program then go back later to finish watching but the app doesn't remember where I left off forcing me to watch the commercials at the beginning then when I scroll to approximately where I left off, the commercials start again sometimes twice. The app should remember what you have already watched and start playing from that point in the program.
So many ads. While watching a show there was an ad break every minute or so and the ads lasted about 1-2 minutes. Very disruptive. If I need to rewind sometimes it will trigger ads. If I accidentally close the app and go back it will trigger ads. If it wasn't for the good shows I would definitely not use this app.
It is quite annoying how frequently the app just kicks me off the stream. Today, it plays for less than a minute and kicks me off, over and over. I pay for this service, so I'd like you guys to do better with this app.
Update: I had to change my default browser from Firefox to Chrome to get it to work. Not sure if this is a Gem issue or a Firefox issue. App stopped working after last update. I can no longer log in. It just takes me to a page that says it has been "moved to here". When I click the link, that URL is broken. Please fix! I have cleared cache, uninstalled and reinstalled. Nothing.
A nice sunny evening and watching SE1 Episode 3 of "Vigil" but wice in a span of 15 minutes it cut out to the "cast" screen... ...reviving "Vigil" the first time was cumbersome since there is no book marking function... ...didn't bother the second time...waste of time... ...mind you it worked without interruption on the first two episodes... ...my first time using the app...not auspicious...
The dead air during the frequent commercial breaks on live streaming, means I'm unsure if it's a commercial, or just the app crashing. The inability to minimize, and continue watching/listening is unfortunate nowadays.
This app needs to fix its ads. While it's a free app from a company that has a tv channel. The ads coming in like every 20 minutes is horrendous. Especially if you're watching a 2 plus hour movie. For example when I was watching 12 Years a Slave there were 8 ads altogether each coming in around every 20 minutes or so. Just makes watching on this free streaming app horrendous. Fix it so it's like Amazon, Disney Plus or even Tubi with ads but fewer which allows a better watching experience.
Great shows, but the advertisement process is so glitchy. Multiple times, I have finished watching a set of 5 ads then switched to another app for a moment and when I reopen the Gem app, it resets and I have to watch 5 ads again. Or the app will glitch and show 5 ads, then play a single frame of the show, then immediately play 5 or 6 more ads. And having to watch ads whenever you restart an episode, even if you aren't starting from the beginning of the episode... Too many ads!!
Worst streaming app ever. Even worse if you subscribe to premium. Every month they mess it up a different way, requiring you to inform them and then do whatever crazy procedures to get it back working. Do yourself a favor and don't install this.
Excellent content, but app is garbage, 1 star for the overall app experience . There appears to be a bug that results in way too many commercials being shown, particularly if you don't finish an episode in the initial viewing,and then go back at a later time to finish it. or the episode will restart entirely
Worst. Streaming. App. EVER. I've never been more frustrated with an app. I have it on my fire stick, and literally just downloaded it on my phone so I could leave this review. The ads while trying to forward or rewind an episode are infuriating. It skips around all over the place!! Why is it about to switch to the next episode with 4 mins left, if I don't click it away?! Ridiculous, free or not...you're the CBC. Figure it out. 🙄
Absolute trash... Mostly terrible content, but I find one tv series to watch and it constantly freezes. Exit out of the app, re-enter, forced to watch 6 ads, then freezes during the ads, then freezes trying to exit out. I've stopped trying. Such a frustrating experience and complete embarrassment of a Canadian streaming service. I used to be able to watch a couple of previous The National episodes, but now the app won't even let me scroll to them. They're right there, but inaccessible.
fix this app please !!! too many ads in a loop !!! yes thats right in a loop, they play you 5 ads, then instead of returning to the episode, they play another set of 5 ads, I went through 25 ads an still cant return to my program. Stupid Tanguay ads.
update: this is the worst streaming app I've ever used and I'm not being dramatic. I fell asleep during an episode of a show, and tried to go back to the episode, forced to watch 4 ads just to OPEN the episode, then tried to skip to where I j thought I may have fallen asleep, the SAME 4 ADS ALL OVER AGAIN AND AGAIN. this app is not good for casting. if you hit the skip ahead button, it jumps you back to the start, with no option to go back to where you were. you can't skip ahead at all.
This is a surprisingly terrible app for such advanced times. I have a paid subscription and every single time I go to watch it tells me I need to subscribe. The app doesn't recognize my subscription until I close out of the app and open it up again. This happens regardles if it was close previously or not. When I watch the news on this app I often find the news playing for approximately 3-5 minutes followed by 3-5 minutes of a standby screen. I will cancel sub after this month because why pay?
How can you enjoy shows when for every minute of it you get harassed by the same amount of ads. Horrible way to enjoy their programs. And even worse? To watch the last 30 seconds of an episode, you HAVE TO WATCH A 3 MINUTES ADS!
I use this app to access my paid subscription to CBC News Network, so this may be more a comment on the subscription... but it is commercials. They talk for like a couple of minutes then go to commercials. come back and do a weather hit, then commercials. come back and do one bit with a guest, then commercials. Worse, half the time the commercial is just a card saying commercial break, I guess to sync with the live broadcast on cable. If you love wasting your time, this is the place for you!
This week I am constantly getting error 3134 on every device. I have made no changes to my ISP or network. Every other streaming service works fine.
UPDATE: 18 months later this app has possibly gotten worse. i have been trying to watch a 1hr episode of Poker Face and it has taken me 1h15 mins because the app keeps freezing and restarting at commercials. ORIGINAL: I don't have premium. So there are commercials which I accept. Except.... After each series of commercials, the screen goes black, and then it kicks me out so I have to log back in, and go back to the show I was watching. Feels a little like punishment for not paying premium
