Very good. Simple interface - in a good way - makes learning the meanings of words painless, even fun. The level of randomness, and the amount and timing of repetition of words is excellent. There are a lot of words but I feel like there could be even more; there are just so many words in the language! All that said, what we were really looking for was prep for the SSAT (and in the fall, the ISEE). My son is working with the SAT words for now.
Great selection of words, great gradients, great for studying for tests. However, for personal enrichment I would prefer auxilary definitions for each word presented, rather than just the usage expected to be on the test. Also, I would like derivations and slightly elaborated definitions on the backs of cards, and the phonetic spelling of words wouldn't hurt either. Technical vocab or "beyond gre" sections would be nice in the future as well.
*I am not a student. I am a grad degree-holding adult who wanted a way to quickly increase my vocabulary of advanced words.* The app style is VERY user friendly. I would give it 5/5 but for 2 issues. First, I didn't fully agree with some of the meanings given to certain advanced words. But, far more important, I felt this did not have enough highly advanced words. I wish there were several higher levels where I didn't already know at least half of the words. But it still increased my vocab.
Absolutely love it. One addition I would like to see is an option to see a rundown list of all the words you have done in a particular section (e.g SAT words, beginner, level 1). Sometimes I see a word very similar to one I had just previously done in some section, and I would like to go back and see the spelling so I can properly learn to differentiate between the two but going through 60 words or more, for one, is a huge hassle.
If you're trying to expanded your synonym vocabulary its okay at best. I want to be able to save words, so I can review later. Needs a review mode where I can "learn" prior from guessing and then remembering the answers. It promotes guessing, the "im not sure" is there but its not the same, especially if you dont know what the word or its answers mean. I was often surprised at the "examples" instead of a definitive definition. Overall 4 stars, for ease of use, good words, and interface.
I've steadily been able to learn some new vocabulary. While multiple choice is great the first few times, I wish I could also do fill in the blank or questions like the normal GRE format as well just to change it up a bit. I defintely like the random word challenge with other people. One other reccomendation: a new level could be created with just words you've gotten wrong from completing all the levels in one section. This allows us to test ourselves again without having to go through 1-7 lvs.
I love this app because it's awesome! It helps me realize how much we change the definition to words we use to help create our own language. The only issue i have with this app at the moment is that they don't make clear if the word is an Adj. Or a Verb or Noun. They had a word "Check" and the best synonym or definition was "(n) a stopping or slowing of progress." When I immediately thought to examine (v). Meh not a big deal but it's would be nice.
On the fence with this... I appreciate the quiz like style of learning. However, there are some mistakes and definitions that are archaic rather than more typical usage. Example: "artless" had both "unskilled" and "without deception" as potential choices, which are both correct though only "without deception" is accepted. I'd also appreciate sharing a definition that is more than one word... But hey it's a free app and the word lists are well chosen. Just have a dictionary open when learning!
I think so far this app is really good. I'm a proficient reader and was 5 grades ahead of my peers as a child... I've selected "wrong" answers at level one because they are without context. For example, Constraint means "limit" but I selected tightness. Clearly the word was chosen because it can be used that way. I think someone honing English may be confused by this type of oversight. I just started so I'll see how it goes.
Good app for practicing vocab for GRE. Only thing I've noticed is some of the words appear to have multiple potential "correct" definitions depending on context. I appreciate that the app teaches alternative definitions for words, but it would be nice to have a bit of context in the prompt. I've begun to start assuming words are using their lesser known definitions and have been performing better since.
The design is more geared for pattern recognition of multiple choice answers rather than actually learning definitions. No option to conceal answers and no dual-sided flashcards so you're more likely to forget. You sometimes get 10+ new words in a row before a review, ensuring you've completely forgotten anything recently learned; and sometimes you'll get a brand new word almost back to back, which is almost just as bad. Also needs parts of speech, and many pronunciations are still missing.
I've been using this app for an hour or two and it provides a nice and clean learning environment without ads. Please look into the example for the word "negligible", it seems there's a problem with it being shown, also in the example of the word "catalyst" Rosa Parks' is spelled "Rosa Park's". I also think you can provide part of speech for each item to further enrich the app experience.
This is such a great app if you want to learn new vocab words! It won't let you pass a chapter until you've got everything down, and it doesn't matter if you fail or not, you can easily come back to it! They're like flashcards, they give you the words, definitions, how to pronounce them, and examples! Highly recommend!!
