This app is actually horrible now. I have constantly been having issues with my Roku Smart Bulb LE, but they used to go away after a few minutes to hours. Now, all connected Roku devices just don't work. They work in the Roku app, but not in Google Home. Setting up a Nest Mini was also terrible. It made me download an app to activate it, but the app isn't even compatible with any devices I own. UI elements are off the screen and unreachable. This app really does need to be fixed.
Update: I have to keep setting it up Chromecast disconnects too often and isn't consistent. It's hard to watch anything you cast from your phone from start to finish unless it's the YouTube app. Any other app is unreliable. It will connect to a room that I selected but when I play a movie or a TV show as soon as an ad or commercial pops up, kiss whatever you're watching goodbye. It won't play, it just keeps loading. What's the point of having it if I can't ever fully watch anything? I hate it.
I expect more out of Google. It's not an intuitive app at all. It's difficult to navigate and everything requires many "clicks" and feels buried. Not only that but the latest update messed up routines (at least that's the main place I've noticed). You cannot make adjustments and save anything. The check mark in the upper right is high and overlaps the top of the screen with notifications and pressing it does nothing. Also will not connect light bulbs right now. Gets to the end and fails.
This app is abysmal at loading sometimes, whether it be live or pre-recorded videos. For instance it's not letting me pull up videos that I need from certain days on some cameras, it just shows an infinite loading icon no matter what I do. Aside from being really bad at loading almost anything, this app is great and convenient to use whenever it works!
I mainly use the app to pause/unpause devices on my network and set schedules. The app has become very sluggish and can take 5 to 10 minutes to load up the individual device screens where the toggling of the pause status happens. This is much slower compared to a few seconds when I initially setup my mesh network I am using old gen pucks for my mesh, so that might come into play.
Have been using for years for home cameras and connected devices. Recently significant issues with nest cameras (new ones) - delays when opening app (cameras show 1d ago then circle to live), failure to connect to cameras, etc. I get a notification that someone is at the door or in driveway but can't get a visual or speak to them because of delays on the app. Read there are improvements in process, but very frustrating currently.
The home devices are fine, and work as expected but the camera/nest stuff went from $60/yr to ,$80/yr to now $100/yr! (this was over 3 years) and have not released a single new feature or ability or upgrade path or nothing with that money. Definitely moving to a different system that shows they value their customers. If you're on the fence with the nest system. It isn't worth it
Having to close it & reopen it so it can update the live video. Everything else works fine. It records everything fine. But if you're trying to watch an event live..you will have some problems. Especially if you link it to your phone to your TV.. it will lag more. But other movie/tv apps won't lag. But this app been having this problem for years. It's great for recording stuff for legal reasons & emergencies. Bad for watching something that's popping off here & now right outside your home.
For the amount of money you spend it should work a lot better than it does. Constantly drops video never connect to the doorbell when you want to watch the live view. And if you need to talk to somebody good luck with that because it's constantly lagging and audio is absolutely terrible. by the time it connects they have left. The batteries always charged and I have an excellent Wi-Fi connection. Hopefully you have better luck than I did. Kinda Sucks!
I've never had a Google app that worked without an infinite amount of issues. My Google Nest cameras are theee worst cameras I've ever had. They disconnect or buffer galore. There is a massive lag issue, even with a perfect connection, in perfect conditions. They work when they want to, not when you want them to. There is no way to turn them on, but there is a way to turn them off. I would only consider upgrading because I'm already in the Google ecosystem. Such a headache!
very inconsistent. sometimes it works. sometimes it doesn't. now, it doesn't work and when i go to automations, home, and try to check presence sensing, it goes to the play store. UPDATE: I removed all my Gosund lights and re added them. reinstalled both, gosund and home. either that helped, or maybe the developer foxed whatever was wrong. so far, my lights turn off when I leave and on when i arrive, as expected... for now.. I updated my 1 star to 4 stars for now.
Not sure if its this app or something else, but I have several smart light bulbs in my bedroom, and I have voice commands set up and they're no longer working. If I say 'Hey Google, Wake up' it asks me what time I want my alarm set for. Before it would turn the lights on with no issues. Now it just does nothing. I even went in and made sure my commands were still set up and still doesn't work. please fix this.
2 stars is generous. This app can rarely do what it's supposed to, far too often it tells me a device isn't available, despite that device being on the same Wi-Fi network. If you are looking for inconvenience and frustration, I cannot recommend this app enough!!! If you want consistent, accurate functionality, look elsewhere. I beg of you. Don't be like me and spend months turned to years thinking Google Home will get better. It won't. Also, Google, save the canned AI reply. Just fix this!
Will not connect to Google device. I moved, and it refuses to forget my last network, so I can't update the device or say use it other than as a Bluetooth speaker. I tried to delete the device, and even though the device is right in front of me. Then my device with all of the old settings reappears, and I am back at square one. I tried the help center, and that was no help at all.
I have no clue what you did, but my Nest cameras are constantly saying offline, or when they do work, a minute into seeing a live view, it says "camera offline." I have to keep clicking retry until they start working again, and then back to clicking on retry. It's ridiculous to pay for a Nest Aware subscription when it doesn't even work correctly half the time now.
Google used to be awesome. Now they suck. This app has been a bear to use. The camera stuff isn't too bad, but the thermostat control is awful. My thermostat routinely does whatever it wants - and I've checked eco mode, people sensing, etc. and it still suck. I tried resetting it only to lose my ability to control it from the app altogether. Google needs to get back to basics and make their apps work better.
The product is my first google product, so I don't have reference, but with the nest doorbell (battery), I'm finding that the battery life isn't all that good. It seems like I'm charging the thing every few days. While there isn't an old doorbell wiring harness to hook into, it's currently on the top of my list of things to do. I'm also finding that I need to buy an internet extender, as it keeps disconnecting. Lastly, it takes some getting use to with only having my samsung phone to make sound.
I can never connect a device in one go. There's always an issue in some connection step. Any troubleshooting is a pain to go through and not easy to follow. I dread everytime I have to open the app to connect a new device. You should also be able to ignore devices found if they aren't yours. I shouldn't have to skip over the device a neighbor has over and over to just try to find the one I'm trying to set up.
Rough, wish it was the go to app for everything like it wants to be. Consistently disconnects my phone from my wifi when simply opening the app. I cannot view cameras (let alone quickly), cannot access lights consistently, just frustrating. Not sure if it's a pixel/Google home issue, but I'd assume they would work together in the same family.
App used to have a keyboard for command entry. It no longer does. I'm hearing impaired, so voice commands are problematic. I really would appreciate having the ability to type commands again. Also, because only voice commands, and my hearing issues, it rarely understands what I'm saying. *a year later and this is still an issue. seriously, a keyboard option for us with hearing issues. come on. 7-25-25
I am impressed with the google home app running on IOS devices.. Yes It would be best to purchase same vender devices if possible.. Step 1 load the specific app set ( sunCo lights+ewelink) in my devices choices.. Set up your devices first from manufacturing company.. After your devices are set up GOTO google[+] add devices Next find your devices in list of manufacturers Then press appropriate links..After all your devices of choice have been linked You may now delete manufacturers install/ set up applications.. The reason you want to delete manufacturers application.. 1 save on memory.. 2 Less confusions navigation of multiple applications.. At the moment as far as can tell horizontal format for devices is available.. A grid option format for devices buttons would be a improvement .... Update.. for grid options.. To group or room up your devices.. Create a label for your devices.. Google home will automatically arrange devices with numbers first then letters. So to arrange your devices priority .. 1 living room, 2 kitchen and 3 Bathrooms. Labeling with out a number will be arranged to bathroom, kitchen, living room..
Settings don't save. Have been attempting to remove the Sleep Mode for days but it always reverts. Backing out and going back into settings you can see that nothing saved. Google Home is essentially bricked with the settings it currently has. Also no way to easily reset devices. Have to yank the cable out of the wall every time Google's device messes up. Which occurs A LOT. Maybe next design include a power and a save button.
The app works. Unfortunately, the loss of convenient controls, due to licencing issues with Sonos degrades the experience. Volume controls for grouped speakers have been lost, both in hardware (volume keys) and in software (apps, Assistant voice-based controls). Pixel devices effectively can't move Chromecasts between Wi-Fi networks or set up a newly purchased/reset device at all.
App is surprisingly buggy and not intuitive at times. For example I will finish editing a routine (Good Morning), hit done, and the screen is blank until I hit the back button. Blank hung screens are bad UI design. Non-intuitive: adding an action to a routine is at one level in the menus and deleting an action is one level down under the action.
The idea of this app is great, but design and interface need work. There are too many submenus without any intuitive way to get to them. The Help selection often contains outdated information about how to get to things. Frustrating. Clear instructions on how to add new devices is lacking. I recently added a new Chromecast and felt like it was stumbling around in the dark until I finally figured things out.
I used to be all for the design, but I've found that with more smart objects the interface is really cluttered. It's already harder to complete basic tasks since every device has different settings. On that note, none of the settings have been very intuitive. I feel like I only open the app to change something, but I spend several minutes tapping around trying to find stuff.
TLDR[[ things that could be improved (simplier/intuitive menu, reorder/hide roommates devices that i don't want/need to see, so the ones i actually use aren't at the bottom) ]] this review started because i'm having to keep factory resetting my smart speaker so it shows up in my new office and not my bedroom at my old house) i've used this app with google products (speakers, mesh networks, chromecast, etc) for over a year now. I spend more time googling how to move devices/troubleshoot connection problems, etc than i would like. this is especially true since i moved into a new home with other users who have their own devices. i'm constantly paranoid about turning on my roommates lights off or on when they're sleeping because i can't hide their devices or even reorder them so they're bot at the top. the menu options are spread too thin, across too much menu. it's hard to find the function that i want, but you cam only do one or two things for a device in a certain menu. just put it all in one with a '...' for the less commonly needed functions.
Update- Months later, some of the issues below have been slowly resolved over time through multiple releases. However, now with the latest release, I cannot access Network Settings and cannot Prioritize devices on the network. Two critical functions that appear to have just stopped working! A one star rating at this point still seems generous. There’s been no overall improvement in the last year since Google forced its users to migrate to this junky app! I recommend looking elsewhere for WIFI devices and apps. ——— Google wifi app is much better...provides more detail related to your setup and straightforward functionality. For example, we have more than 30 devices connected in our home and 4 APs. In the Google Home app, I can’t determine what AP each device is connected to. The app just says Google wifi point. The old Google Wifi app used to show the specific AP, by name, the device is connected to. Made managing and troubleshooting devices and APs much easier. BEWARE, once you upgrade to the Home app, the data in the old WIFi app is overwritten with useless data from the Home app. You cannot revert back to using just the Wifi app. There are several other “features” either missing or poorly designed in the Home app. Don’t switch until Google improves the usability of the Home app. This may be the reason I switch to another product!
Manually the switches work ok, connecting to the TV will only work some times. Chrome cast is a pain. I did a lot of work and is not paying off. I ask for a specific song and it only works on a single speaker, if I am using a group of speakers, google plays what ever it wants. I got three chrome cast and they were fine at first but after a few weeks voice commands to chrome cast stoped working on all three. Google says it doesn’t recognize that device, I reset to factory, start all over and nothing. I am getting board of this I am thinking of going back to apple TV. What a waste of money. I have 5 nest cams and they connect and disconnect constantly, that problem came after google took over. I am angry about that security problem. I tried everything to have the system recognize only my voice so people couldn’t open my garage or my front door, that does not work. I even had a google tech help me set that up, thats not safe, anyone who knows what I named the door can simply ask google loudly through my glass window or glass door and it opens anything. Google is not safe . I regret all the money spent on this worthless system.
I was just strongly encouraged to migrate from the Nest app to Google Home and while everything appears to work, the experience is a huge downgrade. The Nest app had a flow of devices with relevant content. For each thermostat, it showed the settings and current temp. I only had to click through to the device of I wanted to make changes. In Google, I have to select the category thermostats and then an individual device before I see any information. That's two additional clicks pet device instead of just being able to see it all at once. In Nest, I could invite anyone to join the home by entering their email address. It would send them an email invite with a link that would walk them through setting up their account. In Google, it simple tells me I can only add people with a Google account. I have to tell them to go setup an account on their own and then add them later. That is not a friendly experience. I can only see one camera at a time. In Nest, I could see them on a single page and then choose one to get a full page view. And finally, the color scheme is much more stark and less pleasing. This app is in every way worse than what I had with Nest. It works. But from a user experience standpoint, it is a huge disappointment.

*a year later and this is still an issue. seriously, a keyboard option for us with hearing issues. come on. 7-25-25

For instance it's not letting me pull up videos that I need from certain days on some cameras, it just shows an infinite loading icon no matter what I do. Aside from being really bad at loading almost anything, this app is great and convenient to use whenever it works!
It isn't worth it
Not sure if its this app or something else, but I have several smart light bulbs in my bedroom, and I have voice commands set up and they're no longer working.
App used to have a keyboard for command entry. It no longer does. I'm hearing impaired, so voice commands are problematic. I really would appreciate having the ability to type commands again. Also, because only voice commands, and my hearing issues, it rarely understands what I'm saying. *a year later and this is still an issue. seriously, a keyboard option for us with hearing issues. come on. 7-25-25

Bad for watching something that's popping off here & now right outside your home.

very inconsistent. sometimes it works. sometimes it doesn't. now, it doesn't work and when i go to automations, home, and try to check presence sensing, it goes to the play store.
